About the event

Speaker: Derek Sciba, Executive Director at Vision House

Topic: While cities across the country wrestle with visible homelessness on sidewalks and in parks, family homelessness often goes unnoticed. In our area, thousands of families are sleeping in cars, doubled up with another families, or sleeping outside – and it’s growing, up 10% in the last year. Families want to go unnoticed, and face unique challenges to finding safe and stable housing. What are the causes of family homelessness in our area, and what solutions are proven to work?

Cost: Chamber Member & First-time Guest: $25, Non-Member: $30. Price includes lunch and choice of soft drink or ice tea.

Deadline: Please register by October 15th so that we plan for enough seats.

About our speaker

Vision House Executive Director Derek Sciba brings a track record of growing the impact of organizations, with 16 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, most recently at the humanitarian organization World Vision. Derek loves the work of Vision House because it’s not transactional—it’s empowering, personal and addresses core problems that lead to housing instability. Earlier in his career, Derek worked as a TV news reporter, where he produced stories to seek justice for families who had encountered trauma. Derek lives in Newcastle with his wife and daughters and grew up in Auburn. He believes strongly that it’s time to bring the Sonics back to Seattle.
